Our History

The Tobenski-Algera Concert Series was founded in 2006 by composers Dennis Tobenski and Jeff Algera in response to the lack of performance opportunities for young composers. The two began by hiring professional musicians to perform their works and works by other young composers they knew.

In 2008, the Series began accepting score submissions from across the country, and joined The Field’s Sponsored Artist Program to allow them to accept tax-deductible donations to help further their efforts to promote young composers and their music.

The Series has given the premiere performances of 25 works by young and emerging composers in their 2006-2008 seasons.

New York Times critic Anthony Tommasini praised the "engaging and distinctive song cycles" programmed on the Series' first LGBT-themed concert, Songs by Gay American Composers, on June 17, 2007.
